Apache WebServices Project: 12 June 2008 - Apache Rampart 1.4 Released

The Apache Rampart Team has released the version 1.4 of Apache Rampart

Apache Rampart 1.4 is a toolkit that provides implementations of the WS-Sec specifications for Apache Axis2 1.4, based on Apache WSS4J 1.5.4 and the Apache AXIOM-DOOM 1.2.7 implementations.

There are two main Apache Axis2 modules provided with this release.

rampart-1.4.mar -- This provides support for WS-Security and WS-SecureConversation features.
rahas-1.4.mar -- This module provides the necessary components to enable SecurityTokenService functionality on a service.

Apache Rampart 1.4 uses a configuration model based on WS-Policy and WS-Security Policy. It is important to note that the Apache Rampart 1.0 style configuration is also available even though being marked as deprecated.

Apache Rampart 1.4 can be successfully used with the next Apache Sandesha2 release targeted towards Apache Axis2 1.4 to configure WS-SecureConversation + WS-ReliableMessaging scenarios.

The rampart module was successfully tested for interoperability with other WS-Security implementations.

The Apache Cocoon Community is proud to announce the release of Cocoon 2.2.0. Apache Cocoon is a Spring-based framework (since version 2.2 of Cocoon) built around the concepts of separation of concerns and component-based development. Cocoon implements these concepts around the notion of component pipelines, each component on the pipeline specializing on a particular operation. Cocoon 2.2 introduces the idea of blocks. A block is the unit of modularization in Cocoon, allowing the framework to be built upon. (in comparison: Eclipse uses the term plugins, OSGi uses bundles). Everything that goes beyond what Cocoon provides in its core modules (Spring integration, sitemap and pipeline implementation) is provided as block (see below). Custom Cocoon applications are also developed as blocks. A block can provide the following additional features: * general servlet services (any servlet can be managed by the Cocoon servlet-service framework), * special services that provide pipelines as services, * component services (Spring beans, Avalon services/components), * a container for classes and resources. Apache XML Graphics Project: 26 March 2008 - Apache FOP 0.95 Beta Now Available

The Apache XML Graphics team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Apache FOP version 0.95beta.

FOP (Formatting Objects Processor) is a print formatter driven by XSL Formatting Objects [1] and an output independent formatter. It is a Java application that reads a formatting object tree and renders the resulting pages to a specified output. Output formats currently supported include PDF, PS, PCL, AFP, Print and PNG.

This beta release will be available for testing for some time, before a stable release is made. Feedback is welcome, and we would like to encourage as many people as possible to try it out and report bugs and issues on the fop-users mailing list [2]. The most important changes introduced by this release are:

many bug fixes and improvements in tables, better support for keeps and breaks, new features: conditional borders and background on columns and header/footer/body;
better image handling thanks to the new image loading framework provided by the Apache XML Graphics Commons dependency;
improvements and bugfixes for font handling and font auto-detection/-registration;
performance improvements and memory optimizations for the property handling in the FO tree.

Please note that support for Java 1.3 has been dropped. Only one type of binaries is provided now, that will run on 1.4+ JREs.

Apache XML Graphics Project: 10 March 2008 - Apache XML Graphics Commons 1.3 Released

The Apache XML Graphics team is pleased to announce a new release of Apache XML Graphics Commons.

The most important addition in this release is an image loading framework which supports all sorts of different image formats (bitmap and vector) and is highly extensible.

Besides that, there were a larger number of smaller additions and bugfixes.

Support for Java 1.3 has been dropped. Java 1.4 or later is required now.

The 1.7 release fixes a number of bugs brought to light with the 1.7beta1 release, and includes a few new features:

Apache XML Project: 10 December 2007 - Apache Xindice 1.2m1 Now Available

The Apache Xindice team is pleased to announce immediate availability of the new release of Xindice native XML database, Apache Xindice 1.2m1.

This is the first milestone in the 1.2 series of releases and is intended to serve as developer's preview of new features which will be part of 1.2 final release. Specifically, 1.2m1 introduces:

New web based administration console;
Read and write database access via WebDAV API;
Full text indexing and querying of Xindice collections using Lucene;
Full text search extension for XPath query language;
as well as few bug fixes and enhancements.

The Apache XML Graphics team is pleased to announce the release of Apache FOP version 0.94.

This is the second production-level release after the big re-design effort. It includes many bug fixes and new features, the most important being:

auto-detection of the fonts installed on the system; the XML metrics generation is now optional;
support for the collapsing-border model in tables;
internal links in PDF now point to the exact location, and not to the top of the page;
support for UAX#14 type line breaking. This annex of the Unicode standard specifies rules for breaking text into lines depending on the language used.

The Apache Rampart Development team would like to announce the release of the version 1.2 of Apache Rampart.

Apache Rampart 1.2 is a toolkit that provides implementations of the WS-Sec* specifications for Apache Axis2 1.2, based on Apache WSS4J 1.5.2 and the Apache AXIOM-DOOM 1.2.4 implementations.

There are two main Apache Axis2 modules provided with this release.

rampart-1.2.mar
This provides support for WS-Security and WS-SecureConversation features.
rahas-1.2.mar
This module provides the necessary components to enable SecurityTokenService functionality on a service.

Apache Rampart 1.2 uses a configuration model based on WS-Policy and WS-Security Policy and it is important to note that Apache Rampart 1.0 style configuration is also available even though being marked as deprecated.

Apache Rampart 1.2 can be successfully used with the next Apache Sandesha2 release targeted towards Apache Axis2 1.2 to configure WS-SecureConversation + WS-ReliableMessaging scenarios.

The rampart module was successfully tested for interoperability with other WS-Security implementations.

Apache Forrest is a publishing framework that transforms input from various sources into a unified presentation in one or more output formats. The modular and extensible plugin architecture is based on Apache Cocoon and relevant standards, which separates presentation from content. Apache Forrest can generate static documents, or be used as a dynamic server, or be deployed by its automated facility.

New features in this version include:

Locationmaps define the mapping from requests to locations, which enables content and resources to be located at various different sources. The advantage of this is that the URL seen by the user need bear no relation to the location of the source document, thus Forrest can separate the client URL space from the source document URL space. Thus, using the locationmap it is possible to pull together documents from many different locations into a single uniform site. In addition, since the user URL space is now unconnected to the source URL space it is possible to move source documents without breaking any existing user links.
Existing core plugins and sitemaps have been refactored to take advantage of locationmaps. Some core functionality has moved to plugins.
Prototype of new xml-based properties system. Projects and plugins can use a forrest.properties.xml file. At this stage, it supplements the existing forrest.properties file.
Some new documents to explain certain core aspects. Documentation menu navigation changed to provide clearer structure for Forrest project versioned product documentation grouped into howto and background sections. Better layout of the Developers tab into Getting Involved, Resources (mail lists, SVN, Issue Tracker) and Best Practices sections. See also the "linkmap" for an automated Table of Contents ability.

Apache AXIOM is a StAX-based, XML Infoset compliant object model which supports on-demand building of the object tree. It supports a novel "pull-through" model which allows one to turn off the tree building and directly access the underlying pull event stream. It also has built-in support for XML Optimized Packaging (XOP) and MTOM, the combination of which allows XML to carry binary data efficiently and in a transparent manner. The combination of these results in a easy to use API with a very high performant architecture

Initialy developed as part of Apache Axis2, Apache AXIOM (AXIs Object Model) is the core of Apache Axis2. However, it is a pure standalone XML Infoset model with novel features and can be used independently of Apache Axis2.

This is the first release of Batik in approximately two years, and brings many new features and improvements over version 1.6. Notable new features include:

Its been over a month since the 1.1 release of Apache Axis2 and we are happy to announce the release of Apache Axis2 version 1.1.1.

Apache Axis2 is a complete re-design and re-write of the widely used Apache Axis engine and is a more efficient, more scalable, more modular and more XML-oriented Web services framework. Apache XML Graphics Project: 08 January 2007 - Apache FOP 0.93 Released

The Apache FOP team is proud to announce the release of Apache FOP version 0.93.

The new codebase for FOP was started several years ago in order to achieve better compliance with the XSL-FO spec. After three alpha and beta releases, the new codebase has now reached production quality. Therefore we present version 0.93 as the successor of version 0.20.5, FOP's production grade version during the past years.

FOP 0.93 contains the new API first introduced in release 0.92 beta. The preceding API has been removed.
FOP 0.93 again contains many bug fixes and new features. See below for details.

Added support for PDF/A-1b and PDF/X-3:2003. (Note: this may still be a bit incomplete.)
The Java2DRenderer (and therefore the print and bitmap renderers) is now offering the same quality as the PDF and PS renderers.

The Apache XMLGraphics team (PMC) members are pleased to announce the new release of Apache XML Graphics Commons.

Important changes are:

A start was made of an XMP metadata framework.
ImageWriter abstraction supports writing multi-page formats like TIFF.

Apache Rampart 1.1 is a toolkit that provides implementations of the WS-Sec* specifications for Apache Axis2 1.1, based on Apache WSS4J 1.5.1 and the Apache AXIOM-DOOM 1.2.1 implementation.

What is in this release

There are two main Apache Axis2 modules provided with this release.

rampart-1.1.mar -- This provides support for WS-Security and WS-SecureConversation features.
rahas-1.1.mar -- This module provides the necessary components to enableSecurityTokenService functionality on a service.

Apache Rampart 1.1 introduces a new configuration model based on WS-Policy and WS-Security Policy and it is important to note that Apache Rampart 1.0 style configuration is now deprecated and will not be available in next major version.

Apache Rampart 1.1 can be successfully used with the next Apache Sandesha2 release targeted towards Apache Axis2 1.1 to configure WS-SecureConversation + WS-ReliableMessaging scenarios.

The rampart module was successfully tested for interoperability with other WS-Security implementations.

The Apache WSS4J Team is happy to announce the WSS4J-1.5.1 release.

Apache Xerces Project: 23 November 2006 - Apache Xerces-J 2.9.0 released

The Apache Xerces-J team is pleased to announce that version 2.9.0 of Xerces-J is now available. As of this release, Xerces' distribution includes the Xalan serializer. Xerces and Xalan now share a common serialization codebase. The DOM Level 3 serialization support which was in Xerces was migrated into the Xalan serializer and Xerces' native serializer was deprecated. You can find details on the rationale for this change here in the archives. In this release we also upgraded the xml-commons resolver to v1.2 (which provides support for OASIS XML Catalogs v1.1), introduced a few minor features and fixed several bugs.

Specifically, the changes introduced in this release are:

Migrated the DOM Level 3 serialization support onto a common serialization codebase shared with Xalan and deprecated Xerces' native serializer. [Neil Delima, Michael Glavassevich]
Upgraded the xml-commons resolver to v1.2. This new version of the resolver adds support for OASIS XML Catalogs v1.1. [Michael Glavassevich]
Created a new parser configuration which uses a memory sensitive SymbolTable which can handle usage scenarios where the names in the XML documents being parsed are mostly unique. The internalized strings stored in this SymbolTable are softly reachable and may be cleared by the garbage collector in response to memory demand. [Peter McCracken]
Updated the schema loader so that it can now process schema documents with an XML 1.1 declaration. [Michael Glavassevich]
Fixed several bugs in the checking of schema type restrictions that involve substitution groups. [Lucian Holland, Ignacio Hernandez-Ros]
Fixed a bug in Xerces' regular expression support where patterns containing "$" and "^" were being interpreted as anchors in a schema context. [Chris Carman]
Fixed a bug in the XPath matcher for identity constraints which allowed steps containing NCName:* to select element or attribute names which do not match the specified namespace. [Michael Glavassevich]
Fixed a bug in the XPath parser for identity constraints which caused field and selector XPaths containing the non-abbreviated form of the child and attribute axes to be reported as invalid. [Michael Glavassevich]
Fixed a bug which allowed the JAXP SchemaFactory to mutate a user supplied DOM input. [Michael Glavassevich]
Fixed a bug which caused the JAXP 1.2 method for schema validation to produce DTD validation errors when XInclude processing is enabled. [Michael Glavassevich]

Just over 6 months since the original 1.0 release, we, the Apache Axis2 development team members, are very proud to announce the release of Apache Axis2 version 1.1.

Apache Axis2 is a complete re-design and re-write of the widely used Apache Axis engine and is a more efficient, more scalable, more modular and more XML-oriented Web services framework. It is carefully designed to support the easy addition of plug-in "modules" that extend its functionality for features such as security and reliability.

Modules supporting WS-Security/Secure-Conversation (Apache Rampart), WS-Trust (Apache Rahas), WS-Reliable Messaging (Apache Sandesha) and WS-Eventing (Apache Savan) will be available soon after the Apache Axis2 1.1 release. Please see these projects' own sites for further information.
