Apache WebServices Project: 06 April 2007 - Apache AXIOM (WebServices Commons) 1.2.3 Released

Apache AXIOM is a StAX-based, XML Infoset compliant object model which supports on-demand building of the object tree. It supports a novel "pull-through" model which allows one to turn off the tree building and directly access the underlying pull event stream. It also has built-in support for XML Optimized Packaging (XOP) and MTOM, the combination of which allows XML to carry binary data efficiently and in a transparent manner. The combination of these results in a easy to use API with a very high performant architecture

Initialy developed as part of Apache Axis2, Apache AXIOM (AXIs Object Model) is the core of Apache Axis2. However, it is a pure standalone XML Infoset model with novel features and can be used independently of Apache Axis2.

Apache XML Project: 30 March 2007 - Apache Batik 1.7 beta1 Now Available

The Apache Batik team is proud to announce the long-awaited release of Apache Batik version 1.7beta1, a Java-based toolkit for processing SVG.

This is the first release of Batik in approximately two years, and brings many new features and improvements over version 1.6. Notable new features include:

DOM Level 3 Core/Events/XPath support
Improved WMF transcoder support
Near complete SMIL Animation support
A few SVG 1.2 features, such as:
- resource documents
- shapechange and RenderedBBoxChange events
- SVGGlobal startMouseCapture/stopMouseCapture methods
- handler elements

The reasoning behind having a beta release rather than a full release is that there has been a great deal of changes since version 1.6, and while we believe the code to be reasonably stable, it would be beneficial to get feedback from users on any bugs that may have been missed. We plan to have a full 1.7 release in a month or two.

Its been over a month since the 1.1 release of Apache Axis2 and we are happy to announce the release of Apache Axis2 version 1.1.1.

Apache Axis2 is a complete re-design and re-write of the widely used Apache Axis engine and is a more efficient, more scalable, more modular and more XML-oriented Web services framework. It is carefully designed to support the easy addition of plug-in "modules" that extends its functionality for features such as security and reliability.

Modules supporting WS-Security/Secure-Conversation (Apache Rampart), WS-Trust (Apache Rahas), WS-Reliable Messaging (Apache Sandesha2) are already avaialable. Modules supporting WS-Eventing (Apache Savan) & WS-Transactions (Apache Kandula2) will be available soon after the Apache Axis2 1.1.1 release. Please see these projects' own sites for further information.

Apache XML Graphics Project: 08 January 2007 - Apache FOP 0.93 Released

The Apache FOP team is proud to announce the release of Apache FOP version 0.93.

The new codebase for FOP was started several years ago in order to achieve better compliance with the XSL-FO spec. After three alpha and beta releases, the new codebase has now reached production quality. Therefore we present version 0.93 as the successor of version 0.20.5, FOP's production grade version during the past years.

FOP 0.93 contains the new API first introduced in release 0.92 beta. The preceding API has been removed.
FOP 0.93 again contains many bug fixes and new features. See below for details.

Added support for the use of Open Type fonts.
Support for the rgb-icc() function and for a proprietary cmyk() function (for device CMYK colors only through the PDF renderer so far).
Enabled Copy/Paste from PDF content in Acrobat Reader for text using embedded TrueType fonts.
Added support for PDF/A-1b and PDF/X-3:2003. (Note: this may still be a bit incomplete.)
The Java2DRenderer (and therefore the print and bitmap renderers) is now offering the same quality as the PDF and PS renderers.
Automatic support for all fonts available to the Java2D subsystem for all Java2D-descendant renderers (TIFF, PNG, print, AWT).

The Apache XMLGraphics team (PMC) members are pleased to announce the new release of Apache XML Graphics Commons.

Apache XML Graphics Commons is a library that consists of several reusable components used by Apache Batik and Apache FOP. Many of these components can easily be used separately outside the domains of SVG and XSL-FO. You will find components such as a PDF library, an RTF library, Graphics2D implementations that let you generate PDF and PostScript files, and much more.

Important changes are:

A start was made of an XMP metadata framework.
ImageWriter abstraction supports writing multi-page formats like TIFF.

Apache Rampart 1.1 is a toolkit that provides implementations of the WS-Sec* specifications for Apache Axis2 1.1, based on Apache WSS4J 1.5.1 and the Apache AXIOM-DOOM 1.2.1 implementation.

What is in this release

There are two main Apache Axis2 modules provided with this release.

rampart-1.1.mar -- This provides support for WS-Security and WS-SecureConversation features.
rahas-1.1.mar -- This module provides the necessary components to enableSecurityTokenService functionality on a service.

Apache Rampart 1.1 introduces a new configuration model based on WS-Policy and WS-Security Policy and it is important to note that Apache Rampart 1.0 style configuration is now deprecated and will not be available in next major version.

Apache Rampart 1.1 can be successfully used with the next Apache Sandesha2 release targeted towards Apache Axis2 1.1 to configure WS-SecureConversation + WS-ReliableMessaging scenarios.

The rampart module was successfully tested for interoperability with other WS-Security implementations.

Apache Xerces Project: 23 November 2006 - Apache Xerces-J 2.9.0 released

The Apache Xerces-J team is pleased to announce that version 2.9.0 of Xerces-J is now available. As of this release, Xerces' distribution includes the Xalan serializer. Xerces and Xalan now share a common serialization codebase. The DOM Level 3 serialization support which was in Xerces was migrated into the Xalan serializer and Xerces' native serializer was deprecated. You can find details on the rationale for this change here in the archives. In this release we also upgraded the xml-commons resolver to v1.2 (which provides support for OASIS XML Catalogs v1.1), introduced a few minor features and fixed several bugs.

Specifically, the changes introduced in this release are:

Migrated the DOM Level 3 serialization support onto a common serialization codebase shared with Xalan and deprecated Xerces' native serializer. [Neil Delima, Michael Glavassevich]
Upgraded the xml-commons resolver to v1.2. This new version of the resolver adds support for OASIS XML Catalogs v1.1. [Michael Glavassevich]
Created a new parser configuration which uses a memory sensitive SymbolTable which can handle usage scenarios where the names in the XML documents being parsed are mostly unique. The Apache Xerces Project is pleased to announce that version 2.8.1 of Xerces-J is now available. This release fixes several bugs which were present in Xerces-J 2.8.0. It also includes a few minor enhancements and performance improvements.

Specifically, the changes introduced in this release are:

Implemented native support for the ISO-8859-1 encoding. [Michael Glavassevich]
Added a method to XSModel which returns a list containing the members of the substitution group for a given element declaration. [Michael Glavassevich]
Improved the performance of Xerces' optimized readers (for small documents) by recycling their byte buffers. [Michael Glavassevich]
Modified the DocumentBuilder and LSParser implementations so that they drop their internal references to the DOM they just built. If an application is pooling parsers this will allow the garbage collector to reclaim the Document and all of its nodes if the application no longer has any references to it. [Michael Glavassevich]

The Apache XML-RPC team is glad to announce the availability of Apache XML-RPC, version 3. Version 3 is an almost complete rewrite of its predecessor. Although complying to the XML-RPC specification by default, it introduces the concept of so-called vendor extensions. Vendor extensions are available only, if both client and server are using Apache XML-RPC 3. Available vendor extensions include:

A streaming mode allows running client and server with a low memory profile, regardless of any document size.
XML-RPC request and response may be compressed using gzip
Custom data types are supported, in particular null, byte, short, long, float, big decimal, big integer, DOM nodes, Serializable objects, Calendar

Additionally, support for dynamic client generation is available. In other words, if the servers methods are implementing an interface, then the client may create an instance of the same interface, which is actually invoking the servers methods.

Apache AXIOM is a StAX-based, XML Infoset compliant object model which supports on-demand building of the object tree. It supports a novel "pull-through" model which allows one to turn off the tree building and directly access the underlying pull event stream. It also has built in support for XML Optimized Packaging (XOP) and MTOM, the combination of which allows XML to carry binary data efficiently and in a transparent manner. The combination of these is an easy to use API with a very high performant architecture.

Developed as part of Apache Axis2, Apache AXIOM is the core of Apache Axis2. However, it is a pure standalone XML Infoset model with novel features and can be used independently of Apache Axis2.

Apache FOP 0.92 contains a considerable amount of improvements, bugfixes and new features in comparison with last December's 0.91 release, so you're all probably wondering: Why *still* consider it a beta release?

The main reason for this is a fundamental modification in the API, which was motivated by the fact that a lot of resources could be reused for multiple rendering runs. It has, of course, all been rigorously tested, but still we'd very much appreciate any feedback, especially if one of you feels there is room for improvement, be it in the area of performance or user-friendliness. Every one of your comments will be carefully weighed and taken into consideration.

Apache Xerces Project: 14 March 2006 - Apache XML-Xerces-2.7.0-0 released

With a big thanks to the BBC for financial support, 2.7 is finally finished. The major change in this release (besides support for Xerces-C 2.7) is the elimination of the SAX/SAX2 related Unicode bugs - Xerces-P should now support 100% Unicode compliance.

The Apache Xerces-J team is pleased to announce that version 2.8.0 of Xerces-J is now available.

This release introduces several new validation related features and provides enhancements to the XML schema annotation support. All of the schema component interfaces in the XML Schema API now have a getAnnotations() method which returns a list of XSAnnotations. This includes annotations on particles and attribute uses which were previously "lost". In addition, in this release we implemented support for pretty-printing in the LSSerializer, repaired the warn-on-undeclared-elemdef feature which had been broken for several releases and fixed many other bugs.

Specifically, the changes introduced in this release are:
