Apache WebServices Project: 16 January 2009 - Apache AXIOM 1.2.8 Released

Apache AXIOM (AXIs Object Model) is a StAX-based, XML Infoset compliant object model which supports on-demand building of the object tree. It supports a novel "pull-through" model which allows one to turn off the tree building and directly access the underlying pull event stream. It also has built-in support for XML Optimized Packaging (XOP) and MTOM, the combination of which allows XML to carry binary data efficiently and in a transparent manner. The combination of these results in a easy to use API with a very highly performant architecture!

Initially developed as part of Apache Axis2, Apache AXIOM is the core of Apache Axis2. However, it is a pure standalone XML Infoset model with novel features and can be used independently of Apache Axis2.

We, Apache Xerces Project team membmers, are pleased to announce the release of Xerces-C++ 3.0.0. This version is interface-incompatible with Xerces-C++ 2.8.0 and contains a large number of improvements, bug fixes, and clean-ups, including:

Autotools-based build system for the UNIX/Linux/Mac OS X platforms
Project files for VC++ 9
Support for the ICU transcoder in VC++ 7.1, 8, and 9 project files
libcurl-based net accessor
Support for XInclude in DOM
Support for both XPath 1 and XPath 2 models in the DOM XPath interface
Support for the XML Schema subset of XPath 1 in DOM
Conformance to the final DOM Level 3 interface specification
Ability to provide custom DOM memory manager as well as tune the global DOM heap parameters
All public and widely used interfaces as well as a large portion of the implementation were converted to be 64-bit safe.
Various XML Schema fixes including the fix for the large maxOccurs and minOccurs bug as well as for the changed ##other interpretation
Reviewed and cleaned up diagnostics messages
Optimizations for SAX/SAX2 and DOM parsing as well as XML Schema validation

Apache XML Graphics Project: 06 August 2008 - Apache FOP 0.95 Released

Apache FOP (Formatting Objects Processor) is a print formatter driven by XSL Formatting Objects and an output independent formatter. It is a Java application that reads a formatting object tree and renders the resulting pages to a specified output. Output formats currently supported include PDF, PS, PCL, AFP, Print and TIFF/PNG. Apache FOP is Open Source software and published under the Apache License v2.0.

It took longer than expected but we're happy to present the final Apache FOP 0.95 stable release. This is basically a bugfix release to 0.95beta. The most important changes since the previous stable release (0.94) are:

many bug fixes and improvements in tables, better support for keeps and breaks, new features: conditional borders and background on columns and header/footer/body;
better image handling thanks to the new image loading framework provided by the Apache XML Graphics Commons dependency;
improvements and bugfixes for font handling and font auto-detection/-registration;
performance improvements and memory optimizations for the property handling in the FO tree.
elimination of a potential multi-threading problem.
some feature enhancements for RTF output (partial fo:leader support, fo:page-number-citation)

Please note that support for Java 1.3 has been dropped. Only one type of binaries is provided now, that will run on 1.4+ JREs.

Apache WebServices Project: 12 June 2008 - Apache Rampart 1.4 Released

The Apache Rampart Team has released the version 1.4 of Apache Rampart

Apache Rampart 1.4 is a toolkit that provides implementations of the WS-Sec specifications for Apache Axis2 1.4, based on Apache WSS4J 1.5.4 and the Apache AXIOM-DOOM 1.2.7 implementations.

There are two main Apache Axis2 modules provided with this release.

rampart-1.4.mar -- This provides support for WS-Security and WS-SecureConversation features.
rahas-1.4.mar -- This module provides the necessary components to enable SecurityTokenService functionality on a service.

Apache Rampart 1.4 uses a configuration model based on WS-Policy and WS-Security Policy. It is important to note that the Apache Rampart 1.0 style configuration is also available even though being marked as deprecated.

Apache Rampart 1.4 can be successfully used with the next Apache Sandesha2 release targeted towards Apache Axis2 1.4 to configure WS-SecureConversation + WS-ReliableMessaging scenarios.

The rampart module was successfully tested for interoperability with other WS-Security implementations.

The Apache Cocoon Community is proud to announce the release of Cocoon 2.2.0. Apache Cocoon is a Spring-based framework (since version 2.2 of Cocoon) built around the concepts of separation of concerns and component-based development. Cocoon implements these concepts around the notion of component pipelines, each component on the pipeline specializing on a particular operation. Cocoon 2.2 introduces the idea of blocks. A block is the unit of modularization in Cocoon, allowing the framework to be built upon. (in comparison: Eclipse uses the term plugins, OSGi uses bundles). Everything that goes beyond what Cocoon provides in its core modules (Spring integration, sitemap and pipeline implementation) is provided as block (see below). Custom Cocoon applications are also developed as blocks. A block can provide the following additional features: * general servlet services (any servlet can be managed by the Cocoon servlet-service framework), * special services that provide pipelines as services, * component services (Spring beans, Avalon services/components), * a container for classes and resources. The Apache XML Graphics team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Apache FOP version 0.95beta.

FOP (Formatting Objects Processor) is a print formatter driven by XSL Formatting Objects [1] and an output independent formatter. It is a Java application that reads a formatting object tree and renders the resulting pages to a specified output. Output formats currently supported include PDF, PS, PCL, AFP, Print and PNG.

This beta release will be available for testing for some time, before a stable release is made. Feedback is welcome, and we would like to encourage as many people as possible to try it out and report bugs and issues on the fop-users mailing list [2]. The most important changes introduced by this release are:

The 1.7 release fixes a number of bugs brought to light with the 1.7beta1 release, and includes a few new features:

Apache XML Project: 10 December 2007 - Apache Xindice 1.2m1 Now Available

The Apache Xindice team is pleased to announce immediate availability of the new release of Xindice native XML database, Apache Xindice 1.2m1.

This is the first milestone in the 1.2 series of releases and is intended to serve as developer's preview of new features which will be part of 1.2 final release. Specifically, 1.2m1 introduces:

New web based administration console;
Read and write database access via WebDAV API;
Full text indexing and querying of Xindice collections using Lucene;
Full text search extension for XPath query language;
as well as few bug fixes and enhancements.

The Apache XML Graphics team is pleased to announce the release of Apache FOP version 0.94.

This is the second production-level release after the big re-design effort. It includes many bug fixes and new features, the most important being:

auto-detection of the fonts installed on the system; the XML metrics generation is now optional;
support for the collapsing-border model in tables;
internal links in PDF now point to the exact location, and not to the top of the page;
support for UAX#14 type line breaking. This annex of the Unicode standard specifies rules for breaking text into lines depending on the language used.

The Apache Rampart Development team would like to announce the release of the version 1.2 of Apache Rampart.

Apache Rampart 1.2 is a toolkit that provides implementations of the WS-Sec* specifications for Apache Axis2 1.2, based on Apache WSS4J 1.5.2 and the Apache AXIOM-DOOM 1.2.4 implementations.

There are two main Apache Axis2 modules provided with this release.

rampart-1.2.mar
This provides support for WS-Security and WS-SecureConversation features.
rahas-1.2.mar
This module provides the necessary components to enable SecurityTokenService functionality on a service.

Apache Rampart 1.2 uses a configuration model based on WS-Policy and WS-Security Policy and it is important to note that Apache Rampart 1.0 style configuration is also available even though being marked as deprecated.

Apache Rampart 1.2 can be successfully used with the next Apache Sandesha2 release targeted towards Apache Axis2 1.2 to configure WS-SecureConversation + WS-ReliableMessaging scenarios.

The rampart module was successfully tested for interoperability with other WS-Security implementations.

Apache Forrest is a publishing framework that transforms input from various sources into a unified presentation in one or more output formats. The modular and extensible plugin architecture is based on Apache Cocoon and relevant standards, which separates presentation from content. New features in this version include:

Locationmaps define the mapping from requests to locations, which enables content and resources to be located at various different sources. The advantage of this is that the URL seen by the user need bear no relation to the location of the source document, thus Forrest can separate the client URL space from the source document URL space. Thus, using the locationmap it is possible to pull together documents from many different locations into a single uniform site. In addition, since the user URL space is now unconnected to the source URL space it is possible to move source documents without breaking any existing user links.
Existing core plugins and sitemaps have been refactored to take advantage of locationmaps. Some core functionality has moved to plugins.
Prototype of new xml-based properties system. Projects and plugins can use a forrest.properties.xml file. At this stage, it supplements the existing forrest.properties file.

Documentation menu navigation changed to provide clearer structure for Forrest project versioned product documentation grouped into howto and background sections. Apache AXIOM is a StAX-based, XML Infoset compliant object model which supports on-demand building of the object tree. It supports a novel "pull-through" model which allows one to turn off the tree building and directly access the underlying pull event stream. It also has built-in support for XML Optimized Packaging (XOP) and MTOM, the combination of which allows XML to carry binary data efficiently and in a transparent manner. The combination of these results in a easy to use API with a very high performant architecture

Initialy developed as part of Apache Axis2, Apache AXIOM (AXIs Object Model) is the core of Apache Axis2. However, it is a pure standalone XML Infoset model with novel features and can be used independently of Apache Axis2.

The Apache Batik team is proud to announce the long-awaited release of Apache Batik version 1.7beta1, a Java-based toolkit for processing SVG.

This is the first release of Batik in approximately two years, and brings many new features and improvements over version 1.6. Notable new features include:

DOM Level 3 Core/Events/XPath support
Improved WMF transcoder support
Near complete SMIL Animation support
A few SVG 1.2 features, such as:
- resource documents
- shapechange and RenderedBBoxChange events
- SVGGlobal startMouseCapture/stopMouseCapture methods

Apache WebServices Project: 10 January 2007 - Apache Axis2 1.1.1 Released

Its been over a month since the 1.1 release of Apache Axis2 and we are happy to announce the release of Apache Axis2 version 1.1.1.

Apache Axis2 is a complete re-design and re-write of the widely used Apache Axis engine and is a more efficient, more scalable, more modular and more XML-oriented Web services framework. It is carefully designed to support the easy addition of plug-in "modules" that extends its functionality for features such as security and reliability.

Modules supporting WS-Security/Secure-Conversation (Apache Rampart), WS-Trust (Apache Rahas), WS-Reliable Messaging (Apache Sandesha2) are already avaialable. Modules supporting WS-Eventing (Apache Savan) & WS-Transactions (Apache Kandula2) will be available soon after the Apache Axis2 1.1.1 release. Please see these projects' own sites for further information.

Apache XML Graphics Project: 08 January 2007 - Apache FOP 0.93 Released

The Apache FOP team is proud to announce the release of Apache FOP version 0.93.

The new codebase for FOP was started several years ago in order to achieve better compliance with the XSL-FO spec. After three alpha and beta releases, the new codebase has now reached production quality. Therefore we present version 0.93 as the successor of version 0.20.5, FOP's production grade version during the past years.

FOP 0.93 contains the new API first introduced in release 0.92 beta. The preceding API has been removed.
FOP 0.93 again contains many bug fixes and new features. See below for details.

Added support for the use of Open Type fonts.
Support for the rgb-icc() function and for a proprietary cmyk() function (for device CMYK colors only through the PDF renderer so far).
Enabled Copy/Paste from PDF content in Acrobat Reader for text using embedded TrueType fonts.
Added support for PDF/A-1b and PDF/X-3:2003. (Note: this may still be a bit incomplete.)
The Java2DRenderer (and therefore the print and bitmap renderers) is now offering the same quality as the PDF and PS renderers.
Automatic support for all fonts available to the Java2D subsystem for all Java2D-descendant renderers (TIFF, PNG, print, AWT).

Apache Rampart 1.1 is a toolkit that provides implementations of the WS-Sec* specifications for Apache Axis2 1.1, based on Apache WSS4J 1.5.1 and the Apache AXIOM-DOOM 1.2.1 implementation.

What is in this release

There are two main Apache Axis2 modules provided with this release.

rampart-1.1.mar -- This provides support for WS-Security and WS-SecureConversation features.
rahas-1.1.mar -- This module provides the necessary components to enableSecurityTokenService functionality on a service.

Apache Rampart 1.1 introduces a new configuration model based on WS-Policy and WS-Security Policy and it is important to note that Apache Rampart 1.0 style configuration is now deprecated and will not be available in next major version.

Apache Rampart 1.1 can be successfully used with the next Apache Sandesha2 release targeted towards Apache Axis2 1.1 to configure WS-SecureConversation + WS-ReliableMessaging scenarios.

The rampart module was successfully tested for interoperability with other WS-Security implementations.

Apache Xerces Project: 23 November 2006 - Apache Xerces-J 2.9.0 released

The Apache Xerces-J team is pleased to announce that version 2.9.0 of Xerces-J is now available. As of this release, Xerces' distribution includes the Xalan serializer. Xerces and Xalan now share a common serialization codebase. The DOM Level 3 serialization support which was in Xerces was migrated into the Xalan serializer and Xerces' native serializer was deprecated. You can find details on the rationale for this change here in the archives. In this release we also upgraded the xml-commons resolver to v1.2 (which provides support for OASIS XML Catalogs v1.1), introduced a few minor features and fixed several bugs.

Specifically, the changes introduced in this release are:

Migrated the DOM Level 3 serialization support onto a common serialization codebase shared with Xalan and deprecated Xerces' native serializer. [Neil Delima, Michael Glavassevich]
Upgraded the xml-commons resolver to v1.2. This new version of the resolver adds support for OASIS XML Catalogs v1.1. [Michael Glavassevich]

The Apache Xerces Project is pleased to announce that version 2.8.1 of Xerces-J is now available. This release fixes several bugs which were present in Xerces-J 2.8.0. It also includes a few minor enhancements and performance improvements.

Specifically, the changes introduced in this release are:

Implemented native support for the ISO-8859-1 encoding. [Michael Glavassevich]
Added a method to XSModel which returns a list containing the members of the substitution group for a given element declaration. [Michael Glavassevich]
Improved the performance of Xerces' optimized readers (for small documents) by recycling their byte buffers. [Michael Glavassevich]
Modified the DocumentBuilder and LSParser implementations so that they drop their internal references to the DOM they just built. If an application is pooling parsers this will allow the garbage collector to reclaim the Document and all of its nodes if the application no longer has any references to it. [Michael Glavassevich]

Apache WebServices Project: 01 September 2006 - Apache XML-RPC 3.0 Released

The Apache XML-RPC team is glad to announce the availability of Apache XML-RPC, version 3. Version 3 is an almost complete rewrite of its predecessor. Although complying to the XML-RPC specification by default, it introduces the concept of so-called vendor extensions. Vendor extensions are available only, if both client and server are using Apache XML-RPC 3. Available vendor extensions include:

A streaming mode allows running client and server with a low memory profile, regardless of any document size.
XML-RPC request and response may be compressed using gzip
Custom data types are supported, in particular null, byte, short, long, float, big decimal, big integer, DOM nodes, Serializable objects, Calendar

Additionally, support for dynamic client generation is available. In other words, if the servers methods are implementing an interface, then the client may create an instance of the same interface, which is actually invoking the servers methods.

Apache Axis2 is a complete re-design and re-write of the widely used Apache Axis SOAP stack to build on the lessons learnt from Apache Axis.

Apache Axis2 not only supports SOAP 1.1 and SOAP 1.2, but it also has integrated support for the widely popular REST style of Web services: the same business logic implementation can offer both a WS-* style interface as well as a REST style interface simultaneously.

Apache Axis2 is more efficient, more modular and more XML-oriented than the older version. After nearly 2 years of development and numerous incremental releases, The Apache WebServices Commons Project is proud to announce the release of Version 1.0 of Apache AXIOM. (Download : http://ws.apache.org/commons/axiom/download.cgi )

Apache AXIOM is a StAX-based, XML Infoset compliant object model which supports on-demand building of the object tree. It supports a novel "pull-through" model which allows one to turn off the tree building and directly access the underlying pull event stream. It also has built in support for XML Optimized Packaging (XOP) and MTOM, the combination of which allows XML to carry binary data efficiently and in a transparent manner. The combination of these is an easy to use API with a very high performant architecture.

Developed as part of Apache Axis2, Apache AXIOM is the core of Apache Axis2. However, it is a pure standalone XML Infoset model with novel features and can be used independently of Apache Axis2.

Apache FOP 0.92 contains a considerable amount of improvements, bugfixes and new features in comparison with last December's 0.91 release, so you're all probably wondering: Why *still* consider it a beta release?

The main reason for this is a fundamental modification in the API, which was motivated by the fact that a lot of resources could be reused for multiple rendering runs. It has, of course, all been rigorously tested, but still we'd very much appreciate any feedback, especially if one of you feels there is room for improvement, be it in the area of performance or user-friendliness. Every one of your comments will be carefully weighed and taken into consideration.

The Apache Xerces-J team is pleased to announce that version 2.8.0 of Xerces-J is now available.

This release introduces several new validation related features and provides enhancements to the XML schema annotation support. All of the schema component interfaces in the XML Schema API now have a getAnnotations() method which returns a list of XSAnnotations. This includes annotations on particles and attribute uses which were previously "lost". In addition, in this release we implemented support for pretty-printing in the LSSerializer, repaired the warn-on-undeclared-elemdef feature which had been broken for several releases and fixed many other bugs.

Specifically, the changes introduced in this release are:

The Apache Xalan Project released the version 1.10 of Apache Xalan-C++.

Apache Xalan-C++ version 1.10 is a robust implementation of the W3C Recommendations for XSL Transformations (XSLT) and the XML Path Language (XPath). It works with a compatible release of the Xerces-C++ XML parser: Xerces-C++ version 2.7.0. The focus for this release is on bug fixes, pluggable memory management, and enhanced stability improvements in stylesheet execution.

The Apache Xalan Project has released the version 2.7 of Xalan-Java (Xalan-J). The previous release was Xalan-J 2.6 on February 29, 2004, about 17 months before.

New features in the version 2.7:

Support for JAXP 1.3 (thanks to Sun for donating JAXP 1.3) including new default error handling behavior required as part of JAXP 1.3 support.
Support for XML 1.1 in input XML documents, output XML documents and stylesheets themselves (previously only XML 1.0 was supported)
Updates to the SQL extension an SQL samples to support the Apache Derby database.
Support for alternate BSF (Bean Scripting Framework) implementations.
The code that does the serialization (writes the output to a file) was separated into an independent serializer.jar that can be used to write out a DOM, or SAX events into a file, or stream of characters without dependencies on any XSLT processor. Perhaps in the future Xerces-J will use this serializer.
Minor restructuring of the source and binary distributions.
Various performance fixes, and memory leak fixes, and others. A full list is at http://xml.apache.org/xalan-j/readme.html
Upgrade to Xerces-J 2.7.1 and a new version of xml-commons (xml-commons-external-1.3.02).
